I am so happy to have Alene Bertman teaching guitar here at Tommy's. Her level of skill on the guitar is of the highest caliber. With 25 plus years of experience, Alene has an excellent teaching curriculum that is suitable for a new beginner to the seasoned advanced player. She teaches theory, improvisation, soloing, rhythm and more. Her style strengths are in classic rock, blues, country, and folk. Acoustic and electric guitar. Her rate is $25.00 for a 1/2 hour lesson and she is available on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Ronnie James Dio passed away Sunday May 16th. Ronnie had been battling stomach cancer the past year. Tommy's Guitar Shop extends our heart felt sympathy to Ronnie's family and loved ones. Thank you for your amazing talent Ronnie. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

01-15-10 Skinpimp is in the House!

We just received our first order from Skinpimp. Ryan Kirkland is the master mind of Skinpimp pedals. Ryan's background of electronic repair, tattoo artist and musician, give him a unique edge on many of today's builders. He understands the circuits and he also does amazing graphic art that make his pedals POP! Having a musicians ear assure his pedals are tuned to perfection. I just test drove the MKIII, Buzzaround, and MKI. All three pedals have endless sustain. The Buzzaround is perhaps the ultimate fuzz circuit and Ryan's version delivers in spades. Big and burly fuzz tone abound. The MKIII has a tighter fuzz character, but can also be set to some pretty raspy settings that are sure to wake of the neighborhood. A three position toggle allow you to chosse between, big bottom bass boost, treble boost, or mid boost. The MKI is primitive, just as you would expect. A little spitty, nasty unruly fuzz pedal that will leave a smile on your face for days.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and I find you and your loved ones in good health. We are now getting ready for 2009 to come to a close and 2010 to kick in. 08-13-09 Les Paul R.I.P.

The guitar and music world lost one of our most important elders today. Les Paul passed away today at the age of 94. There are so many contributions Les Paul made to music that I would need to write a book to cover them all. The most well known contribution is the guitar made by Gibson that bore his name on the headstock. Another huge one is multi-track recording. Every musician who has recorded using multi-track recording (today's standard way of recording) needs to give Les Paul a tip of the hat. Please take the time to learn more about this amazing man. He really made this world a better place to live in.

Sorry its been a while since my last news post. That is not due to a lack of news, but more to a lack of time to post.

Exciting stuff ahead....

EMG Pickups are coming to Tommy's. A large order has been placed all the most popular models along with some of the harder to find EMG models are all on their way. I also provide in store installation!

VooDoo Labs are also one of the newest additions to the fold. Power Plus 2's, and pedals are all on the way along with a couple new models for 2009!

In the boutique pedal world I have an order standing with MJM effects of Canada and an independent builder from England named Michael Hudson. MJM offers a wide line up of vintage fuzz pedals along with a dead ringer Univibe clone. They are all on the way.

Michael Hudson hand builds a replica of the Sola Sound MKII Professional and the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face. The two greatest fuzz circuits ever made IMHO. Built using NOS Germanium Transistors and tuned to perfection these will be a rare treat that you will not find at any other store!

I am also now stocking GHS Strings. GHS Boomer 10-46 are my string of choice for most of my solidbody guitars. Those strings take a beating like no other and always sound great.

07-25-08 Retro-Sonic & Mad Professor COMING SOON!!!

We have some more exciting news to share with everyone!!! Retro-Sonic and Mad Professor effects are both coming to Tommy's Guitar Shop. Large orders have been placed with both builders and we should see them arrive early September.

Hand built in Finland and the brain child of Bjorn Juhl. Mad Professor builds fine gems such as the Deep Blue Delay, Mighty Red Distortion, and the Little Green Wonder overdrive. Mad Professor leaves no stone unturned in their never ending pursuit of ultimate tone.

Retro-Sonic Custom Guitar Effects came to be in 2001. Tim Larwill is the man behind these amazing little boxes that are hand built and tested in Ottawa Canada. A couple of highlight pedals in their deep line up are the Chorus and Phaser. Both of these pedals are moderen improvemnts of vintage classics that we have known and loved for years.

The Dual Drive is a clean boost or overdrive pedal that is smooth, smooth, smooth. This pedal is a fantastic choice for single coil pickups. Very creamy with nice mids. A very fine sounds pedal indeed.

The Power Driver is an NPN Silicon transistor based overdrive/fuzz based on the famous Colorsound Power Boost pedal. Just like the original this pedal is a MONSTER. Be careful with this one you could put your out!

The Dirt Royale is an overdrive/distortion that works great with humbuckers or single coils. This pedal has a wide dynamic range and cleans up like a germanium fuzz pedal.

04-26-08 Mike Battle, Inventor of the Echoplex dead at 90 - RIP

Mike Battle Inventor of musicans' Echoplex dies By Jim Carney Beacon Journal staff writer

POSTED: 09:17 a.m. EDT, Apr 09, 2008

His invention was used by such guitar greats as Jimmy Page, Joe Walsh, Les Paul and Chet Atkins.

It was called the Echoplex and it was invented by Akronite Mike Battle, a Ford retiree, who lived in Goodyear Heights.

The 90-year-old Mr. Battle died Monday.

Calling hours for the man who also invented the Tubeplex will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hopkins Lawler Funeral Home at 547 Canton Road in Akron.

Funeral services for Mr. Battle will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home followed by burial at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Cuyahoga Falls.

The Echoplex was something that changed the way musicians performed on stage, according to Mr. Battle's Web site, http://www.tubeplex.com .

The invention, which was small enough to carry in one hand, the Web site said, allowed musicians to ''incorporate studio quality echo effects to their live performance.''

Chet Atkins and Les Paul were among the first users of the device, according to a Web site.

And, in an interview with Looper's Delight, at http://www.loopers-delight.com , Battle said Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Joe Walsh of the James Gang, also used the device.

''It's functionality has been time proven and almost every delay effect made after it has paid homage to its design: variable delay time, variable repasts/regeneration, wet/dry balance control all in on panel easily adjusted by the player,'' Mr. Battle's Web site said.'

In a 1984 Beacon Journal story, Mr. Battle talked about being in a Florida bar where he spotted the Echoplex on stage in use by the band.

''When the band finished, I went up to one of the band members and asked him how he liked using it,'' Mr. Battle said in the article.

''He raved bout it so I told him, 'Hey, I'm the guy who invented it.' "

The musician, Mr. Battle said, told the next performer, country western singer Tommy Overstreet, that the inventor of the Echoplex was in the audience and Overstreet then introduced Mr. Battle on stage.

''Embarrassed the hell out of me, but I did kind of enjoy it,'' Mr. Battle said in the article.

Mr. Battle's Web site said ''guitarists have been the main users of this effect,'' but that saxophonists, singers, synthesizer players and more'' used it as well.

''If Mike had not built his legendary machine, who knows what we would have missed.'' the Web site said.

Mr. Battle operated Battle's Electronics on East Market Street for many years.

10-04-07 Roger Giffin Custom Guitars

Tommy's Guitar Shop is very proud to announce we are now carrying Giffin Guitars. Here is the short history lesson on Giffin Guitars.

Roger started Giffin Guitars in England, where it existed in various forms from the late 60's up until the mid 80's. During those years he was fortunate enough to hook up with a lot of very good musicians. This gave him the opportunity and encouragement to design and build guitars that became widely accepted in England at that time.

The workshop was located under a bridge by the river Thames in London, and it soon became a meeting place for many 'name' player of that time. It became the hotspot for people seeking great guitars and guitar service.

Regular customers included Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend and John Entwhistle (The Who), Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), Andy Summers (The Police) David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), and many more. Hundreds of quality, reasonably priced guitars were made at "Giffin Guitars."

In the late '70s, Roger was designing a prototype guitar that became the Steinberger 'M' series.

It was because of this guitar that Roger was offered the job to run Gibson's West Coast custom shop in Los Angeles. Roger needed a change at that point, and jumped at this opportunity.

So, in 1988 Roger moved to California. Once in L.A. and , employed by Gibson, Roger started building Gibson Custom instruments and fronting the Gibson West Coast repair shop. During this time, Roger built many different Gibson custom guitars, while the "Giffin" side of things was "on a slow burner."

The client list during this time included names like Eddie Van Halen, Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton, Jimmy Page and Malcolm Young, among many others. Roger ran the Gibson custom shop up until Dec. '93 together with his co-worker and good friend Gene Baker. At that point it was decided that the whole Gibson operation was to be moved to Nashville. I worked in Los Angeles up until June of 2004 building small quantities of hand made guitars from my home.

In July 2004, Roger moved to Portland Oregon.

Roger continues to maintain, as always, the very highest hand built standards for his instruments. "I feel that my hands-on approach to guitar building still gives me the greatest satisfaction, and it allows me to produce unique and individual instruments."

08-01-07 Our 1 year anniversray!

So...... A year ago I bought my friends guitar shop and made it my own. Sounds easy enough, but first....... lets jump back in time 4 years.

I remember the day my friend Donny called me and told me he was starting his own guitar shop and he found a location in Everett. He invited me up to see the spot and share his vision and dreams. I drove north to downtown Everett and found Donny's store located on 1911 Hewitt Ave. From the moment I walked into the store, which was yet to be set up, I fell in love with it. Donny's shop was a cool little space on the ground floor of a four story apartment building constructed in the early 1900's. It was originally a hotel where the original train station was located. It had high ceilings, creeky old wood floors, and beautiful vintage light fixtures hanging from the ceiling. The city of Everett had just finished building a 6000 + seating arena right across the street and was in the process of building new sidewalks and doing street improvements. I could clearly see that this area was in an exciting rebirth and Donny was in the heart and center of it. I was really happy for Donny, he had made a great move. This might sound weird but that day I also felt deep in my heart that someday I would be in this spot, that this shop would be Tommy's Guitar Shop.

So now lets fast forward 3 years.... It was a Friday in April 2006 when I got a call from Donny, at the guitar store I was managing. Now getting a call from Donny was not that unusual, as we are friends and we also would do business together trading gear back and forth. But this was not your ordinary phone call. I answer the phone and Donny asks me, "Tommy would you like to buy my guitar shop?" I thought he was joking, but since I really did want to buy his shop I said Yes. I than asked him if he was being serious. He said YES, and I was now going numb. I said "Dude you better not be messing with me." He said "Tommy I am dead serious." The next 3 months were a whirl wind. I had to put together my business plan, get a bank loan, and most important make sure my wife was ok with me doing this. I did a lot of praying and spent all of my free time getting my ducks in a row. It was intense!!! I moved into the store in mid July and had my first full month of business in August 2006.

The first year has been AMAZING!!! I have been blessed with lots of really great customers who I consider my friends. These customers are located in the communities that surround my shop. People all over the Puget Sound. A lot of these people I have known for years!! There are also my friends that I have made all over this awesome country we live in and for that matter all over the world. People in California, New York, Virginia, Oregon, Missouri, Texas, Hawaii, Alaska, London, Tokyo, Germany, Finland, Brasil, Australia, and so many many more. I wish I could be going to all the cool locations that I have sent guitars to! In fact that sounds like a good goal to reach. Well I just wanted to share a little bit of my story with the people that helped make my dream come true, and again, THANK YOU. You are all amazing! I look forward to what the future holds and I will continue to work hard creating the coolest guitar shop in Washington.

A sweet Marshall 1959x 100 watt Superlead reissue, and a 1997 Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Elegant with a super deep 3D quilted maple top in Amber. Our first order from The Malekko Heavy Industry just arrived. Malekko is the builder of the B:ASSMASTER bass fuzz/octave. This pedal is a sonic replica of the famous Maestro Brassmaster. With some modern upgrades, such as true bypass switching, and a heavy duty enclosure. From the second I plugged this monster in I knew we had something special.
